Project Overview

Following a Value Stream Mapping activity, this business embarked on a PICME change programme consisting of a series of facilitated activities. Following a number of successful improvements in the manufacturing area, the company decided to take lean elsewhere in the business by looking at the warehousing process.

A cross functional team was set up that included warehouse operators along with supervision and management from the area. PICME facilitated this team through a process mapping activity, which in conjunction with lean principles was used to identify waste. Structured problem solving was then used to generate suggestions to remove waste where possible. These ideas were subsequently prioritised and incorporated in to the team’s implementation plan.

Some of the changes made have involved the re-structuring of warehouse layout to reduce travelling time for operators and changes to the warehouse management system to eliminate unnecessary, time consuming computer transactions. The improvements made have supported the warehouse in despatching record volumes of stock with no increase in staffing.
